Yankees announcer Michael Kay is LIVID about manager Aaron Boone’s decision to pull Gerrit Cole
Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay was furious with manager Aaron Boone’s decision to pull pitcher Gerrit Cole in the sixth inning.
The Yankees are in a terrible position in the American League Championship Series with just four combined runs and no wins. The team is close to being eliminated via sweep if they fail to secure a win tomorrow after Saturday’s 5-0 loss in the Bronx.
In the top of the sixth inning, with the Yankees 2-0 down, starter Gerrit Cole loaded bases with no outs. Manager Aaron Boone made the decision to pull Cole — who had 96 pitches — and put in Lou Trivino.
Trivino gave up two hits to make three runs – although he wasn’t charged with either of them as Cole put them on base. Those runs were the last scored for either team as the Yankees fell 3-0 down in the series.

“I don’t get it, I mean I heard his reply, he said: ‘You know we’re 2-0 down, we have to keep it right there. Don’t you trust Gerrit Cole? More than Lou Trivino?” Kay wondered.
“Even Gerrit Cole on 95 places I trust that he will save my season. No problem for Lou Trivino, but that’s not even your top reliever. That does not make sense! The only thing that would have made sense would have been if Cole had gotten hurt.
“He’s not hurt! He’s your ace! He won those two games against the Guardians. He’s the reason you’re in the American League Championship Series! And you’re putting him out there because you didn’t want the game to get out of hand? He’s the guy who can keep it from getting out of hand!’
Cole had loaded the bases in the sixth inning when the Yankees were already 2-0 down against the Astros
After Cole deployed a relief, three more runs were netted and New York lost 5-0
Gerrit Cole was asked if he was surprised Aaron Boone pulled him in the 6th inning:

Cole was equally surprised and expressed his belief that he had more in him.
“Feeling like a pitcher like me, I’m probably surprised most of the time. I always want to keep going,” Cole told the media afterwards.
Fans took Kay’s anger to social media after the game as they called for Boone and general manager Brian Cashman to be fired.
One fan wrote: “Fire Cashman. Fire Boone. All fire. Because nothing will ever change if we don’t.’
“Boone has to go,” wrote another. “I’ve never seen a group with such talent run so poorly. It’s a total waste. #repbx’

A fan called for an early end to the Yankees’ season if it meant the manager headed toward the exit.
They said, “I’m comfortable with the Yankees retiring Game 4 and now only firing Cashman and Aaron Boone.”
Meanwhile, one supporter simply blasted, “FIRE AARON BOONE WHAT A TERRIBLE MANAGER.”
Another insisted New York needed a “shake up” and urged the team to bring in former Yankee Don Mattingly
“The 2017 and 2019 series were so much more painful because we had a chance of a fighter.” They said.
“I want Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman gone. I’ve had enough of this. Bring in Don Mattingly to manage the Yankees. You MUST shake it up.’

However, some supporters insisted that it wasn’t Boone’s fault alone, but the organization as a whole.
One fan wrote: “Cashman? Must go. Blessing? Must go (by association). The hitting coaches? Get out. The analytics team? Must be revised. Who does game planning? Bye!’
Another added, “The Yankees can fire Aaron Boone, but if the rest of the front office isn’t held accountable, we’ll just get the same results next year. Firing Joe Girardi after an eight-year Championship drought has accomplished nothing, and firing Boone will be the same. This team needs a new voice.”
Meanwhile, a supporter claimed Boone was a scapegoat for the front office’s mistakes.
They wrote: “People think only Aaron Boone getting fired is going to make a difference is hilarious man exactly what the Yankees FO want you to think he’s clearly a puppet and a scapegoat for their mistakes.”

Fans at Yankee Stadium appeared to boo Star Slugger and MVP contender Aaron Judge after he struck again on Saturday night.
Reporter Michael Fabiano, however, insisted that fans weren’t just booing Judge, but the Boone-led team.
“Yankees fans don’t boo Judge alone,” they wrote. “They’re booing another Cashman/Boone team that doesn’t show heart and can’t beat another postseason. blow. It. High.’

New York, who last reached the World Series in 2009, is close to being eliminated by Houston for the fourth time in eight seasons. After sprinting to a 61-23 record in early July, the Yankees surged to a 38-40 mark the rest of the way and stuttered in the playoffs.
Christian Vazquez added a two-run single and Trey Mancini a sacrificial fly as the Astros chased Cole in the sixth inning and opened a five-run lead.
Javier threw seven innings during the Astros’ combined no-hitter on June 25 at Yankee Stadium and was almost as sharp this time. He didn’t allow a ball from infield until Giancarlo Stanton’s one-out double in the fourth – the only strike Javier allowed.
The Yankees face a do-or-die Game 4 this Sunday night. Only once in major league history has a team come from a 3-0 deficit in the postseason, Boston versus the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS.
