The airline is understood to have lost power around 80km off the coast of Narooma, NSW, on Thursday evening
An AMSA spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the Singaporean container was not in “imminent danger” of hitting the coast.
“AMSA has engaged a specialist emergency towing vessel, ETV Svitzer Glenrock, from Newcastle to assist in towing the MV Rio Madeira,” the spokesman said.
“Backup generator is available on board and the crew is working to resolve the main power issue.
“The ship and the crew are not in immediate danger of running aground.
“AMSA is closely monitoring the ship and receives regular reports from the ship’s company.”
The emergency ship from Newcastle will arrive at the Rio Madeira on Saturday afternoon and will assist in towing the ship.
The Rio Madeira is larger than the Portland Bay Carrier, which was drifted away from Port Botany earlier this year.
Craig Gibson, one of the three on board during the July Portland Bay Airline rescue, tweeted his support for the recent rescue mission, writing, “Go rescue another team!!”
There are believed to be 27 crew members on board the ship.
