RimWorld was originally released in 2013, and since then there have been three more installments of downloadable content to expand the gameplay and immerse you more in a distant futuristic world. The latest DLC for the colony simulation game was released on Friday October 21st. For $24.99, players now have the opportunity to start a family with children and tinker with genetic modifications.
In this game, reproduction can be both natural and artificial. A natural birth allows colonists and outsiders to be impregnated, while an artificial birth allows a fetus to be conceived using technology. With the addition of artificial birth, there is a lot of room for genetic modification. Here’s a breakdown of the ways players can alter genes to their advantage in RimWorld Biotech.
There are over 200 genes coming to RimWorld. These have been divided into two categories: germline genes and xenogenes. Germline genes follow the rules of normal genealogy, predominating in each cell and being passed on to children. On the other hand, xenogens are technologically implanted and not inherited.
Genes are a balancing game. When conceiving a child, genes must be carefully selected. Players must consider the downsides of genes that might seem resourceful. For example, the consequence of a strong gene would mean that a person would need more food to support themselves.
