NHS plans for tougher rules on transgender treatment for children have been welcomed by campaigners – but criticized by transgender advocacy groups.
NHS England has outlined its strategy to replace the Gender Identity Development Service at the controversial Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in London.
Doctors should take responsibility instead of therapists or psychologists.
They also explain that staff should not automatically ‘affirm’ a child’s desire for a ‘social transition’ to the opposite sex, adding that ‘anti-puberty drugs’ can only be prescribed under an NHS research programme.

Stephanie Davies-Arai of campaign group Transgender Trend said the moves were “welcome”.
The trans rights group Gendered Intelligence described the approach as “completely unnecessary pathologization of social change”.
The proposals will be publicly consulted.
