Liam Hampson’s death in Sala Apolo, Spain: His family will have to wait two weeks to know how he died
The family of the Australian rugby league player who fell 14 meters to his death in Spain will have to wait two weeks to know exactly how he died.
Liam Hampson was found dead at Sala Apolo, a nightclub in Barcelona, on Wednesday noon local time.
He was on a trip of a lifetime, touring Europe with friends including Titans full-back Alexander “AJ” Brimson and Broncos stars Jordan Riki and Jesse Arthars.
His parents, Brett and Jamie Hampson, are expected in the Spanish port city of Barcelona this weekend for a toxicology report that they can’t begin until his parents see his body.

High Court Medical Legal Officers told News Corp that toxicology reports cannot begin until his parents have seen his body, and then the results will take around two weeks.
“What happened to Liam is very sad, at the moment a judge is collecting evidence from people at the crime scene and we are waiting for his parents to contact us to set up an appointment to see his body at the morgue,” the department spokeswoman said Lydia Garrida.
“Once the parents have seen Liam we can start the laboratory tests, the results of these tests will take two weeks and will determine what substances may have been used and what caused his death.
“The results of the toxicology report are for family use only and will be available in two weeks.”
Hampson is believed to have scaled a wall in the dark after “getting lost” at the club and going through an emergency exit.

Looking for a way out, he fell 14 meters to his death in a courtyard on the other side, which is closed to the public.
His lifeless body lay undiscovered on the terrace in a restricted area of the club at the foot of the vast chasm for more than 30 hours before Sala Apolo staff found him.
On Thursday, Mossos d’Esquadra regional police officers told the Daily Mail Australia where Hampson was found.
“It was in a courtyard that was not part of the public area of the nightclub,” a police officer told Daily Mail Australia.
“I don’t know how he would have gotten into that part of the building, but he entered and fell into a courtyard from there.
“The fact that it wasn’t a public area helps explain why the workers who sounded the alarm didn’t do it until midday Wednesday local time.”
Police said Hampson’s death was treated as an accident in the early stages of the investigation.
Circumstances surrounding the discovery of the Redcliffe Dolphins player’s body came to light when the club’s director Albert Guijarro confirmed that chilling CCTV footage had captured Liam’s final movements that fateful night.
Mr Guijarro told local radio program Versió RAC1 on Thursday that “the entire route that Liam took is being recorded step by step”.
He said security cameras showed Hampson exiting Apolo’s main room through an emergency door, though one of his friends tried to stop him.
He then went through a second emergency door, Mr Guijarro said, onto a large terrace before realizing the doors he had passed could not be opened from the outside.
The club director said Hampson then saw a 50-foot wall and jumped over it “without thinking” and fell into a void with canals running through it.
Mr Guijarro said the path Hampson took was “very clear and enlightened” and that he had “taken a leap to a place that was not even halfway along his route” and “it wasn’t well understood” why he made this decision.
He added that Hampson was eventually found when his friends were looking for him after co-workers heard the sound of a cell phone.
“A mobile phone rang with a noise… we didn’t know where it was coming from, we finally saw it was coming from the canals,” Mr Guijarro said.
One of Hampson’s traveling companions, Riki, took to social media with a series of heartbreaking tributes after Hampson’s death was confirmed.
Hampson’s friend and traveling companion, Broncos player Jordan Riki, posted a series of heartbreaking tributes to his “beautiful brother” on social media.
“I love you my brother, you beautiful soul, I’m so sorry,” wrote Riki on Instagram.
‘Can’t put into words how I feel. I love you brother, I’m so sorry.’
Riki thanked everyone involved in finding Hampson and said goodbye with “RIP, my beautiful brother.”
He was also behind a fundraiser that raised $72,448 in a matter of hours to bring Hampson’s body home and support his grieving family.
In the GoFundMe description, Riki wrote that Hampson is “an outstanding talent on and off the football field…he helps teammates…and raises kids.”
“Liam was a beautiful soul who brought people together with her love, wisdom and wit,” he wrote.
Among the more than 1,600 donors were NRL stars Kalyn Ponga, Alex Glenn, Reece Walsh, Brendan Piakura, Anthony Don, Paul Sironen and Charlotte Caslick.
Riki disabled donations after the fundraiser slightly exceeded its original goal of $50,000.
