Juventus struck twice in three Serie A games on Friday night as Moise Kean, Weston McKennie and a second-half brace from midfielder Adrien Rabiot gave Max Allegri’s side a much-needed 4-0 win over Empoli.
The hosts closed the gap on the league’s European spots after an impressive performance at the Allianz Stadium that eased the pressure on their under-fire manager.
The win means Juventus have now won five games in a turbulent season that saw the 36-time Italian champions struggle to find consistency after previously falling into midfield.
Everton loanee Kean scored first in the first ten minutes when he used his much-missed striker instinct to find a cross from Filip Kostić and score his first league goal in 20 Serie A games.
Empoli tried to respond with chances of their own in the first half but failed to force any significant chances that seemed to await the equaliser.
American McKennie doubled Juventus’ lead in the 15th minute of the second half with his header from a corner, leaving Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario helpless. Relief in the old lady as Juventus found some respite.
The dejected travelers enjoyed the Lions’ share of possession during the routine encounter between one of the Serie A giants and the league’s minnows. Paolo Zanetti’s side managed just three shots on target throughout the match.
Summer fan Adrien Rabiot, who was on the verge of a move to Manchester United in the last transfer window, claimed all three league points when he headed a floating cross at the back post. Vicario tried to get a hand but couldn’t stop himself.
The visitors had given up. Juventus didn’t have that. Rabiot scored his second goal of the game just 12 minutes later, sealing a massive victory for Juventus.
Friday’s victory can be summed up as Juventus’ most cohesive performance this season, with Allegri’s side threatening to defeat previous doubters.
Fans are starved of the game-changing football their side have provided in numerous years of title dominance.
But the win over Empoli can be a catalyst for better things with just six games remaining before the World Cup in Qatar.
