RimWorld is an acclaimed sci-fi colony sim that invites players to manage and simulate their own colonies in space. What makes the game unique is that it uses an AI storyteller to procedurally analyze and create unique events that the player may encounter during their playthrough. RimWorld debuted in Early Access on PC in 2013 before a full release in 2018. It recently came out on July 29, 2022 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
As the game continues to gain momentum even with new expansions, it’s perhaps no surprise that many are wondering whether or not the game can be played with others. Here’s a breakdown of whether or not RimWorld is multiplayer.

Since its full release, RimWorld has received two major patches and a premium expansion called “Royalty” but no official multiplayer support. The game is designed as a single player experience.
However, Ludeon has long made it so that modifying the game is extra easy, and to this day the RimWorld mod community continues to provide multiplayer experiences for those who want it on PC.
RimWorld’s main third-party multiplayer provider, Rimworld Multiplayer is an open-source, community-driven mod that has its own official website and can be downloaded from the Steam Workshop, GitHub, and the official Ludeon forums.
Here are the instructions on how to play RimWorld Multiplayer according to the mod’s website:
Create a single player world, choose the colonists and landing spots you want, and wait for your colonists to come out of their pods. Save the game, then press the escape key and click the Host button in your menu. Configure your desired settings in the Host window and click Host. When hosting on Steam, users can easily connect using your Steam friends list. With the direct option, users should forward 30502 over UDP.
