Four-time Cox Plate champion Glen Boss says “FEARLESS” Nash Rawiller can upset favorite Anamoe
It’s a brave new world at Moonee Valley Racing Club with a fresh field vying to win the Cox Plate which has been dominated by superstar mare Winx for the last four years.
According to Tabcorp, this means finding a tip for this year’s Cox Plate will be a lot harder since Winx isn’t at this year’s event.
“From a betting standpoint, this year 2022 is the most interesting of recent months for Cox Plate as there is a fantastic crop of Australian middle distance races waiting to claim their claim and emerge from behind the massive shadow of Winx,” explained Tabcorp in their official preview of the Cox Plate.

“Superstar mare Winx cemented her place in Australian racing folklore last year, winning the Cox Plate for the fourth straight year, an achievement unlikely to ever be repeated.”
However, four-time Cox Plate champion Glen Boss believes the “fearless” Nash Rawiller is an unremarkable dark horse to win the $5 million Group 1 race – and says he has the tactics to beat the favorites Anamoe and his jockey James McDonald to the post.
With big guns Zaaki and Alligator Blood pulled into barriers one and twelve respectively, the Race Nine feature event will kick off with a bang.
Tabcorp’s Rohan Welsh says players have stayed alongside the favorite but can find plenty of value elsewhere.
‘Anamoe is still heavily backed by TAB and holds 40% of Cox Plate’s investments with several notable bets including one of 10,000 at $2.40,’ he said.
‘El Bodegan was the big mover on the second favorite at $5.50 with around 15% of the money ahead of a slacking Zaaki at 10% and $6.50.’

Retired Champion Boss says five-year-old Bay Mo’unga will thrive under a fierce ride from Rawiller.
“Nash will have a positive attitude towards him, he won’t fall behind,” said the 96-time Group 1 winner.
“You got Zaaki to step forward and kick hard because he has to… You have Alligator running all over him and you have Mo’unga who won’t be surprised.

Nash is probably the smartest driver out there, he does exactly what he wants to do fearlessly and doesn’t care what people think.
He does things that others would not think of because they are too afraid of being judged if they did something wrong. When he gets it wrong, he says at least I did something.
The 47-year-old Victorian was praised by bettors this year for his smashing ride of Think It Over during the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2000m.

Rawiller steered the seven-year-old to the extreme left of a difficult Randwick course, leaving the rest of the field on the rails.
The 5500+ start jockey bested home race favorites Verry Elleegant and Zaaki to post a massive $41 prize in the $4 million race.
But his brave ride came at a price, as NSW race stewards fined Rawiller $40,000 for excessive whip use and suspended him for two weeks.
Boss, who won the Cox Plate in 2005, 2009, 2012 and 2020, says McDonald won’t get the race even from the perfect draw.

While McDonald is currently Cox Plateless in his 71 Group 1 triumphs, the 53-year-old retired legend says the Kiwi has the ‘weapon’ of the race.
McDonald looked down and out at Anamoe’s 300-yard mark during the Might and Power Stakes on Oct. 8, but pulled off a stunning foot spin to beat home backmarker I’m Thunderstruck and pace runner Zaaki.
Bred by Godolphin and trained by James Cummings, the four-year-old is the $2.30 favorite for the Cox Plate, having won 10 of his 19 races and missed a finish just twice.
Anamoe jumps off barrier four and should be sitting on the pace behind Zaaki ridden by Jamie Kah.

Last year, Irish horse State of Rest won by a half-head over favorites Anamoe, while 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant rounded out the placings.
