Fans on social media were quick to mock Steven Gerrard after Aston Villa demolished Brentford just days after he was sacked as head coach.
The 42-year-old was ousted on Thursday after a series of poor results left him just one place above the league’s relegation zone – after losing six of his first 11 games.
And after Villa stormed 3-0 within the first 15 minutes of their game against Brentford – just three days after his sacking – fans were quick to suggest the Liverpool legend was “holding them back”.

Fans were quick to bring up Gerrard’s name after their sparkling start from Villa, with one fan writing: “3-0 that’s unreal. Gerrard really held us back.’
Another wrote: “Villa makes Gerrard look like a fool… 3-0 after 15 minutes.”
In a rather brutal take, one fan said: “Proof Steven Gerrard should never manage a Premier League football club again. #AVFC’
“These people must have really detested Gerrard, the unrecognizable #avfc,” suggested another user.
The Mittelland side, led that day by caretaker coach Aaron Danks, managed to score as many goals in 14 minutes as in the last six games under Gerrard.

The backlash continued, with one fan referencing the home stand signing at Villa Park. He wrote: “The Holte End sings ‘Are u watching Stevie G?’”.
“I’m sorry, but Steven Gerrard was the problem,” claimed one fan.
Meanwhile, Barstool Sports simply posted a picture of a star-studded Barcelona team with the caption: ‘Villa sans Gerrard’.

Villa took an early lead thanks to Leon Bailey’s goal in the first two minutes of the game. Danny Ings then scored a brace to give the hosts a 3-0 lead within the first quarter of an hour – something fans weren’t used to this season.
Gerrard signed a three-and-a-half-year contract worth about £5.5million a season but despite winning four of his first six games it was a terrible 2022, with Villa taking just 32 points from 31 games.
They had net transfer spend of £52million in the summer but are above the relegation zone on goal difference alone – hardly what billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens were thinking when Sawiris said the sky was the limit for Villa three years ago.
